The Legislature Returns Next Week. Urge “No” on These Three “Charter Killer” Bills.

The California State Legislature returns from their summer recess next week and will soon take up three major “charter killer” bills in committee. CSDC urgently needs your help to defeat all three.

The month of August is the final month of the legislative biennium, with many bills pending before state lawmakers. For more on California’s legislative cycle from a charter school perspective, check out our Legislative Advocacy Roadmap (PDF)

The three “charter killer” bills are among the 150+ bills CSDC has been tracking as part of its ongoing legislative advocacy efforts. You might have caught our recent update after the House of Origin deadline

The first of the three “charter killer” bills, AB 2214 (Garcia and Lee), would subject charter school facility projects to two separate sets of regulations–at both the local and state levels. A similar bill was defeated last session and we are hopeful to have the same impact this year.

TAKE ACTION: AB 2214

The second bill, AB 2484 (Bonta), will make catastrophic changes to the Charter School Facilities Grant Program by greatly restricting the amount of funding that charter schools may receive. Previous CSDC advocacy on this bill resulted in over 16,000 emails to state lawmakers when the bill was before the State Assembly. Now that the bill is in the Senate, CSDC encourages you to take one minute and email your State Senator to urge the defeat of this bill.

TAKE ACTION: AB 2484

The third of the three “charter killer” bills, SB 1343 (Leyva), would require all new charter schools (established after January 1, 2023) to participate in CalPERS and CalSTRS. Previous CSDC advocacy on this bill culminated in hundreds of emails to State Senators. We now ask that you email your State Assemblymember and urge a vote of “No” on this bill.

Thank you for taking the time to participate in our campaigns to defeat these bills.  The charter sector needs your support!
