About

The Ralph M. Brown Act (Brown Act) and its related statutes are a series of state laws that promote transparency in government and ensure that the public has access to meetings of local legislative bodies, including charter schools.

Over the last couple of years there have been a handful of important revisions to the Brown Act and as a result, CSDC has rerecorded and updated its on-demand Brown Act Training for use by CSDC Member Schools and Authorizers.

Written by California attorney Jennifer McQuarrie and narrated by CSDC’s Governance and Policy Specialist, Caitlin O’Halloran Hellar, these self-paced, on-demand modules contain important information for both administrative leaders and charter school board members.

Brown Act Certificate

While the Brown Act training is not explicitly required by California law, this training is a practical necessity for all governing board members and school leaders and many charter schools have committed to such training as a condition of their school’s charter or other agreements.

Charter leaders who view the five Brown Act modules and pass the required assessment will receive a certificate of completion that may be used to verify training; the certificate is considered to be valid for up to two years.
