State lawmakers will cast critical votes on charter school legislation at the end of April. SB 414 (Ashby) is directly related to AB 84 (Muratsuchi): both respond to calls for increased charter oversight following past cases of fraud. But where AB 84 imposes blanket mandates and restricts flexibility for all charter schools, SB 414 offers a targeted, preventative approach developed in collaboration with the charter community.

CSDC worked with Senator Ashby and coalition partners to get SB 414 passed in the Senate Education Committee on April 23 with strong bipartisan support of 6–0. The bill now heads to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Up next, AB 84 will be considered by the Assembly Education Committee next week on April 30; this will be its first public hearing since it was introduced in December.
