This week CSDC hosted several dozen California charter school business leaders as a part of CSDC’s annual Charter Business Officer (CBO) Training Program.
The two-day training at the Westin Sacramento was the second of two in-person sessions in the state’s capitol and culminated participants’ journey through the rigorous 15-week program.
CSDC has hosted the CBO Training Program annually for over a decade, continually refining and deepening the extensive curriculum in response to the growing demands placed on charter school leaders with fiscal management and oversight responsibilities.
“This is the best professional development for charter school leadership I have ever been a part of,” said Steve Wallis, a recent CBO Training participant and current Executive Director of Da Vinci Schools. “I recently finished my MBA and I learned more valuable, relevant information in this program than I did in the entire MBA program!”
Other presentations during the two-day session in Sacramento were led by CSDC Executive Director and Founder, Eric Premack, and former Chief Financial Officer of Summit Public Schools, Joyce Montgomery.
The program concluded with a session on the fundamentals of charter school advocacy led by CSDC Legislative and Outreach Specialist, Laura Kerr, who shared how participants could leverage their experience as highly trained fiscal leaders.
“It’s critically important that charter school leaders – including fiscal leaders – understand the do’s and dont’s of advocacy and know how to identify the elected officials who make the most consequential decisions affecting their schools,” said Laura Kerr. “They can also play a helpful role in busting myths about charter schools in their communities and day-to-day lives.”
Over 40 California charter schools and organizations were represented in this year’s training program, including:
